Design & Build
At 34 cm width, the Franke A400 ranks among the more compact representatives in office fully automatic coffee machines for sites up to 100 cups daily. The machine architecture is based on a modular platform: bean hopper, milk system and cleaning unit are readily accessible from the front without requiring additional side space. At 700 mm height per EU/UK sources, the machine fits below standard wall-mounted cabinetry. Depending on accessories (tall bean hopper, cup warmer), height can vary—a US specification states up to 851 mm, which may be critical for some installation sites. The fixed mains water connection and 4-litre water tank are accessible without tools, though tank versions are noted as less common in the manual.
The housing consists of powder-coated steel and smooth-textured plastic surfaces. Workmanship is rated by several dealer consultants as robust but visibly trimmed for cost-optimised series deployment. Stainless steel elements are visible—for instance in the drip tray—however compared to standard gastro fully automatics such as WMF 1500S+ or Schaerer Coffee Club, the A400 features more plastic components on the operator interface and touch surfaces. No colour options are offered ex-works.
The central control element is an 8-inch capacitive touchscreen, similar to tablet interfaces, offering large, high-contrast product selections. User navigation is menu-driven but deliberately shallow, enabling untrained staff or self-service users to select beverages quickly. Occasional feedback notes the slightly reflective surface under direct sunlight—in window-facing break rooms this can lead to operator errors. Separate mechanical buttons exist only in the service area; regular users see only the display and a single cup-height selection button.
Service accessibility is notable: brew group module exchange is possible from the front. In case of fault, no housing disassembly is required; replacement typically takes under five minutes per dealer parts suppliers. Compared to compact home systems, the A400 is built for both regular maintenance contracts and spontaneous parts logistics. Bean hoppers are lockable; with the typical two-hopper option (600 g each) they remain easy to clean without rotating the unit.
Suitable for sites with minimal left and right clearance, but at least 10 cm wall clearance at the rear is necessary to route cables and milk tubing. The milk module attachment does not extend beyond the rear, though it varies slightly by regional version in detail. In tight staff rooms, the milk cooler may limit installation height. In summary: the design prioritizes rapid access over representative gastro aesthetics. Operators expecting stainless steel through the side panels and weight above 45 kg should consider the next higher Franke series.
