Dynamic Pricing

Term from the vending glossary

Automatic price adjustment at the vending machine based on time of day, demand or remaining stock. Example: fresh products become cheaper shortly before expiration; hot beverages cost more in the morning than the afternoon. Technically feasible via remote price control in the VMS; in Germany raises no food-law concerns, though competition-law review is advisable.

Dynamic prices adjust according to rules — time of day, demand, or remaining product shelf life. In vending operations, the most compelling case is perishable goods: a salad priced lower at 4 pm generates more revenue than one disposed of at day's end.

Trust is the boundary. Operators who charge different prices for coffee depending on demand will lose employee customers over time, even if the economics work out. Price display and charge must match at all times, otherwise a pricing strategy becomes a customer complaint.
