Compliance
Legal Metrology
Term from the vending glossary
Legal framework (MessEG, MessEV) governing the accuracy of measuring equipment in commercial transactions. Relevant for vending machines: weight- or volume-based pricing (e.g. coffee in grams, water flow in litres) requires calibrated measurement units. Calibration compliance is verified by the calibration authority (state office).
Weights and measures law governs which measuring devices may be used in commercial transactions and how their accuracy is documented. For the vending machine business, it applies when price depends on a measured quantity — for example when dispensing by volume or weight, or by electrical current at a charging station.
In classic unit sales from the vending compartment, it does not apply: a package is sold at a fixed price. It becomes important at the margins of the product range, and this question should be clarified before installation, not after the first inspection.
