Hot Beverage Technology
Brew group
Term from the vending glossary
Core component of a fully automatic coffee machine: compresses ground coffee into a puck, forces hot water at defined pressure (9 bar) through it, and automatically ejects the spent grounds. Removable for easy cleaning.
The brew group is the component in which ground coffee is compressed and hot water flows through. It determines how evenly extraction occurs, and it is simultaneously the part subject to the highest wear: seals, pistons and mesh work under pressure and temperature with every cup.
Of practical relevance is whether the brew group can be removed. Removable units can be cleaned under running water by site personnel themselves; permanently installed groups require an automatic rinse programme and, in case of maintenance, a technician. On machines with high daily throughput, accessibility is therefore a cost factor, not just a convenience matter.
